Where Whimsy Meets Purpose: My Take on the Trolls at Filoli
I visited the Trolls: Save the Humans exhibit by Danish artist Thomas Dambo at Filoli Gardens, and it was magical. Hiking through the woods to discover each towering troll sculpture felt like a fairytale come to life. These sculptures, made entirely from reclaimed wood, told stories not just with form—but with purpose.
Watching kids climb on the trolls and laugh in delight while absorbing subtle messages about sustainability, recycling, and our relationship with nature reminded me how powerful art can be. No lectures. Just wonder, play, and meaning woven together.
As a designer, I’m always looking for ways to inspire behavior through experience. This installation reminded me that sometimes the most lasting impact doesn’t come from telling people what to do—but from inviting them into a story they can be a part of.
